Why replace the Rails?

1. When they are split (see below)
   

2. When rebuilding the action, even if the rails do not seem to be cracked, they will probably be riddled with minute fissures known as metal fatigue, especially if they are of the older type which have a thinner brass casing than the new rails.
3. If the customer complains of a lack in the dynamic range & new hammers have been fitted, yet the rails are of the older type, then the rails will probably be riddled with metal fatigue. This means that the energy will be lost in the rails, instead of being transferred via the hammerhead to the string.
Replacing the rails will restore the dynamic and tonal range.  

All rails are supplied by Steinway either pre-drilled or blank.
Pre-drilled rails are suitable for most Hamburg built grands.
Blank rails are used for early grands, New York-built grands and K uprights.

    2. Replacing two pre-drilled rails £220 + packing & carriage
    3. Replacing three pre-drilled rails £305 + packing & carriage
    4. Replacing four pre-drilled rails £390 + packing & carriage
    5. Replacing one blank rail drilled to pattern £170 + packing & carriage
    6. Replacing two blank rails drilled to pattern £280 + packing & carriage
    7. Replacing three blank rails drilled to pattern £390 + packing & carriage
    8. Replacing four blank rails drilled to pattern £500 + packing & carriage
